ITMayDay Upgrades To iPhone 4

Okay, so I thought I would take the plunge and upgrade to the iPhone 4 even after reading about its’ connectivity issues and dropping calls. I thought I would reserve judgement until I’ve had the phone for at least a week or so and use it rigorously. I’ve had my new iPhone now for a little over 2 weeks with it being on about 16 hours each day.

Well it was no surprise to discover that I lose the signal on a regular basis whenever I’m at home in my house. I should mention that I’m on the Rogers (Canadian) network. Whenever I’m away from the house, I don’t seem to have the same issues. I upgraded from a Blackberry and never once had a dropped call or can locate network message. I will continue to monitor my signals at home, but as this is a common occurrence, it might be a while before this issue is resolved.

By far I prefer the iPhone over the Blackberry. But Apple needs to resolve the signal issues. I don’t believe this is a Rogers issue as stated earlier; I did not have any signal issues with my BB or other Rogers phones.

Conclusions. Buyer beware, if you don’t mind losing signals once in a while or dropping the odd calls here and there then go for it. Besides all that, I do like my new iPhone for now.

GPS Cameras & Phones Create Privacy Issues

Imagine posting a picture of your vacation on Facebook and that picture gives your exact location (referred to a GEO Tagging) where you were when that it was taken. Now imagine taking a picture of your old car or jewellery to sell on Craigslist. If those pictures were taken with a GPS enabled camera, then your exact location can be known and would be robbers will know your address in no time. Don’t let this happen to you. There are steps in which you can take to prevent this from happening to you. And the first thing is to know what you are sharing and how it will impact you and your families’ safety. Don’t be a victim.

How to: Dual Boot Vista/XP The Easy Way

To dual boot is easy if you have two HDD’s, but I will now explain how to do so if you have one and have to create a partition

BEFORE YOU TRY THIS ALWAYS BACKUP YOU DATA

~If you already have Vista installed and want to dual boot XP~

1. Download VistaBootPRO FOR FREE and save to Memory stick/CD

2. Decide on the space you want for XP, it is recommended that you have about 30gb, but it all depends on the size of your HDD

3. In Vista go to Start/Control panel/Administrative tools/Computer management/Disk management. Select primary partition, right click and select shrink, now choose the size you want, Vista will then automatically give it a new drive letter

4. Now reboot with your XP CD inserted, install XP

5. Log into XP, install VistaBootPro(.net framework 2.0 needed to run it)

6. Open VistaBootPro, ignore backup message, click System Bootloader and All Drives, click on Install Bootloader

7. Select Run Diagnostic, you will see Vista and XP menu, rename them if you want to

8. Click Apply to update settings

9. Reboot you PC and you will now have a boot option for Vista and XP

That’s it!

GPCode-like Ransomware Is Back?

It seems the malware GPCode which first surfaced in 2004 is back according to Securitylist.com. I received a frantic call from a client last week informing me that all files on his desktop has been encoded and he cannot open them. After visiting the client, it turned out that he has inadvertently clicked a link to a website which started the chair reaction and continue to spread the virus. It seems the virus also infected quite a few files on the fileserver as well of which they do not have a valid backup in place.

This is a bad situation to say the least. Now after doing quite a bit of research, it seems that all data that has been infected might be lost. I will be working with my client closely to have all their PCs and their File Server cleaned and virus free. Hopefully in the future, users will use more restraint when clicking on links that they are not sure of.

Grey Cup Sunday

Today is not like any ordinary Sunday. Why you ask? Because it’s Grey Cup Sunday in Canada. I know, must Americans could care less. As a matter of fact, most Canadians could care less as well. But I for one do care and I love my Canadian institution of Football and it has been around longer than the NFL.

Now don’t get me wrong. I love my NFL as well and that is the reason why I love technology as much as I do. Sitting in my family room now watching picture in picture and blogging. Technology is grand. NFL in the small window and CFL in the main window. I would hope that more Canadians would be more interested in the CFL but for some strange reason, they’re not! This I wonder. Is it the way the game is marketed? Or is it bbacause the NFL is so well marketed and promoted even on Canadian television. There seem to be more NFL on Canadian tv than CFl. Even football fantacy pools are catered more to the NFL than the CFL. We are all guilty of being pro-American when it comes to all major sports. We can say hockey is our game but by last count, we only have 6 of the 28 hockey team here in Canada.

I believe that something needs to be done and soon before we loose all our identities. We now have the Bills in Toronto series where the Bufallo Bills play two games at the Rogers Centre. On pre-season and the other a regular season game. Both these games draw more fans that the Grey Cup itself. Pathetic. So lets all ban together and keep our Canadian spirits alive and go Pro Canadian. eh?

MagicJack Nightmare

Man what a day I had today. First I could not get my parent’s Magic Jack to work properly. I spent more than an hour on the phone with them. I don’t know what happened but they could not be my eyes at all. This was very frustrating to say the least. Anyway, finally we had to call it quits.

Twitter for Beginners

What is Twitter and why would I use it?

Twitter is a Microblogging software application that is accessible online. People post comments about their activities and links to new articles or blog posts that they find interesting and helpful. Helpful in the sense ti adds to their own personal knowledgte base. The concept is based on the concept of social networking. A virtual network of link minded individuals.
Twitter is a free social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author’s profile page and delivered to the author’s subscribers who are known as followers. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow open access. Ever since late 2009, users can follow lists of authors instead of following individual authors. All users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or external applications. While the service itself costs nothing to use, accessing it through SMS may incur phone service provider fees.

Since its creation in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Twitter has gained notability and popularity worldwide. It is sometimes described as “SMS of the Internet”The use of Twitter’s application programming interface for sending and receiving text messages by other applications often eclipses direct use of Twitter.
Founder Evan Williams described Twitter;
” What we have to do is deliver to people the best and freshest most relevant information possible. We think of Twitter as it’s not a social network, but it’s an information network. It tells people what they care about as it is happening in the world.”

The sharing of information to create Personal Learning Networks will become clear as we walk through this tutorial.

The following is a short tutorial on how to use Twitter. It is part of the Elearning Center workshops designed to help beginners use web 2.0 tools. Please watch the calendar for details on free and low cost webinars for newbies.
